Beginning of the end Chapter 38

Meet the heir

‘Let me guess this one is not interested in the throne’

Sougata looked happy with the comment ‘yes, princess Amaneet doesn’t play royal games, killing off good troops for the fun she has no power at the moment, Amaneet does what she can,’ he pointed at the little ones she was feeding

.The princess had a familiar presence, and I started trying to place the image, then finally it clicked, she bared a resemblance to an old friend ‘she looks like the queen who died’

‘Her majesty is the firstborn of our beloved but departed queen I hoped you might have recognized her, Amaneet being purer not like those upstairs’ Sougata spat in disgust at the others
‘Has she entered the competition’
‘Amaneet wanted to but her champion became ill and cannot fight, which has conveniently well-timed,’ Sougata looked unhappy again

‘Can anyone be the champion to the princesses’ Sougata looked puzzled
‘I have seen no one fight other than the Krotki troops in the arena’

Beginning of the end Chapter 37

The Krotki homeworld Krotko had evolved while I had been away, for the worst, when I first visited this planet all those years ago, the air was cleaner and with less traffic back then, now it became a smog-filled choking world with little to no breathing room, ‘Joshua, everything changes for the worst’ I said to myself finding my bearings, I steadily walked in the general direction of the palace on my way I passed mining shafts which double as homes. One thing that hasn’t changed is how Krotki residents huddle together like ants or termites in the forest, there is no space to walk or stop you ended up being pushed aside or pulled along with a crowd, to prevent this I place a barrier around my body to deflect traffic, most Krotki sense the energy through receptors on their heads. Krotki can use more than sight to keep away from danger, allowing them to evade the shield wall I created ‘damn that wretched thing’ a child Krotki bounced off the shield, leaving him dazed on the floor, his family member scooped him up quickly removing him from my path ‘even here civilization has broken down’ I muttered again.

Inflation is high, is it the Federal government to blame?

If you have been awake and shopping for groceries past few months, you would have noticed a sudden jump in grocery bills. They are lost 20% up. In essence what you bought for $100 now is costing you well over $120, even more depending on what it is you are stocking up on.

How did this happen?

You have probably heard it’s the Fed’s fault, may be the government’s fault. They gave money to people to sit when the country was in lockdown over virus which btw is going to be with us forever as is quite evident.

let’s talk first about Fed’s and the QE (quantitative easing). Since the housing and stock market crash of 2007-2008, the Federal Reserve has been buying assets. Now keep in mind that Fed of the United States have almost unlimited amount of money. So you are looking at billions of purchases a month. This has been going on since after the housing crash. But inflation was hardly out of control until last few months. So Cleary it’s not the fed who drove up inflation.

Beginning of the end Chapter 36

Summoned back to the Catronia by Rhina on the pending investigation, what she wanted I had no idea. Maneuvering the shuttle around onto the landing pad at the command bunker on the other side of the planet, this well-hidden base right in the forest area beneath the capital and all the wildlife.

Closing the engines down. The landing pad started moving down into the installation, reaching the bottom Colonel Bracken waited for me, ‘how are you Colonel I hear she is bringing in everybody for this meeting’
‘Henrik, she doesn’t look happy whatever happened has got her riled up’ we both entered the conference room, only a few of us here indicating the information was only for those Grand Master Winter fully trusted, looking quickly at the assembled group, Rhina held the center sat down watching us approach, Harrison as always stood nearby over her shoulder possibly the only aid allowed in, looking over the faces a couple of generals and an Admiral of the sector fleet

‘Good you are all here’ Rhina spoke without preamble ‘what you hear today, you will keep it between yourself I need not indicate the security level or the punishment if this gets out,’ activating the viewer displaying images of blood and body parts all over the place.

Beginning of the end Chapter 35

Talesse and Gunther had discussed the deal on letting the Praetorian have the location of the ship, hoping to either lower the sentences for their crime and putting them on what would be a holiday resort prison. The Ganymede mines where most people went to die collecting volatile substances for the empire.

Gunther had convinced me well, but he was still undecided as the day rolled on he was still in deep thought ‘hello Talesse, how are you’ beyond the cell was a lady with red hair all tied up in a bun with blue eyes dress in a very nice tight-fitting uniform, showing off every curve this had my attention instantly,

Maybe she’s my lawyer, ‘I get little company of the opposite attraction down here these days, you have been an improvement on my day’ I smiled trying, to keep my eyes of a rather generous décolletage trying to squeeze free.

Beginning of the end Chapter 34

Later in the day after a moment of hesitation to an invitation, I met up with Amie at the park in town. She was pleased to see me ‘Devin’ she shouted Amie was wearing a blue dress which flowed nicely in the light breeze, in her arm a basket, blanket, and XE the little bot floated behind its eye looking at different flowers and the odd bird on the ground ‘brought a little picnic sadly XE had to come he doesn’t leave my side unless it’s school’ we both laid the blanket down placing the basket to one side, XE floated above us like a buzzing bee.

Amie opened the basket showing a flask of juice inside two cups plus a small arrangement of nuts and fruits in a bowl ‘I didn’t know what you like I brought an arrangement’

‘Looks delicious how are you XE’ I said, he swooped in front of my face his eye blinked.

Beginning of the end Chapter 33

Months had passed since that night with Amie, the days had gone by in the usual way classes continued, my brother and I learned more skills from mother and father improving on our simplest techniques to more complex.

The only thought through my mind was Amie we had become close to each other over the past months, we sat near each other in class studied together in the library, now and then Varak would butt in with his usual stories about gravball he seemed put out by the fact we virtually ignored him on most occasions.

On this occasion, it was just him and me ‘ow’ I moaned ‘that was hard you know, this is practice, not actual combat’ I rub my arm we were using training swords made of wood and going through a series of basic style our father taught us to learn
‘Your mind drifted off, and it’s a standard pattern you should have been able to foresee the next move,’ Varak said in a slightly aggressive tone I could sense him getting frustrated with me.

Beginning of the end Chapter 32

‘Good news Karvar, very good news’ I hadn’t seen Trent this excited since he met Silva the whole team made it back to Basterrat without further trouble. Hark had explained the complexity of the Sabattus shipyard. Silva and he had gone over several plans for infiltration into the secure science complex, nothing looked good, all would fail, when one plan would bypass the security, another backup system would take its place putting them in danger of being captured, we need some outside help,

‘What we need is a good diversion,’ Hark said

‘What kind do you need,’ I said

Beginning of the end Chapter 31

‘Please begin your landing Henrik Winter’ control voice said while he settled the Stormbreaker into the docking bay of the Argus detention center.

‘Haven’t been here in a while’ muttering to myself the landing smooth and with a slight nudge to the thrusters, perfect not even a scrape on the landing pad, going toward the exit ramp, the welcome party at the bottom comprised two escorts in armor and a big fat gentleman in front he spilled out of his garb, great somebody must have stuffed him here to keep him out of sight, he was also in charge, looking at the rank on his shoulder.

‘Hello, Mr winter what brings you to Argus my name is Cosman the commandant of this facility,’ the man’s jowls wobbled with each syllable.

Beginning of the end Chapter 30

‘Thank you, Mrs. Arsenault, that was delicious I can’t eat another bite,’ I said,
‘Am glad you enjoyed it, Devin’ she said with a smile, everyone was just off the kitchen in a cozy dining room, the setting was nice, it had a table big enough to fit six people around comfortably Amie, Tom, and both parents were around the table plucking away at the remains of their meal.

Amie and I sat together while Tom and his father seated opposite, Mrs. Arsenault was at the head of the table where she made frequent trips to the kitchen with ease without navigating around everyone, the family had spoken on numerous topics. Tom being the butt of an occasional joke which left him in a grump.

‘Devin what are you going to do once school has ended,’ Mr. Arsenault asked, sipping on a hot drink.
‘I will hopefully end up at station one and become a fully fledged praetorian like my parents’
